The favorite place for recreation and rest for city residents is the artificial Lake Balaton. The origins of the Water Sports Center in Wodzisław Śląski, which was its first and official name, date back to the mid-1960s. The construction of the center was supported with heavy equipment and significant financial contributions by the Coal Mine May 1 in Wilchwy. Leveling and cleanup work was performed by youth and residents as part of community service. Already on July 22, 1965, the first official event took place on Balaton in the form of kayaking competitions combined with fireworks displays. In the 1980s and 1990s, the center's infrastructure fell into neglect and partial destruction. Only at the beginning of the twenty-first century was Balaton restored to its role as an open municipal water-recreational center with modern infrastructure. In addition to a sandy beach, attractions include a playground located on the sand, a beach volleyball court, and an exercise area. Visitors to the facility have the opportunity to rent water bikes, kayaks, and SUP boards. In the eastern part of the reservoir, special stations for fishermen have been created. Around the water reservoir, through the forest lining its shores, there is a walking and cycling path. The diverse terrain is conducive to running and walking. The center hosts open sports and recreational events, and the most recognizable is a cross-country race for the Blue Ribbon of Balaton.
