The cemetery located at Sobieskiego Street is one of the places of war memory in the city. Approximately 2,500 soldiers of the Red Army who fell in 1945 during the fighting for Upper Silesia are buried here. The necropolis has a layout characteristic of Soviet military cemeteries: rows of simple gravestones marked with a red star, mass graves, and a central monument.
In the 1950s, the original crosses and crescents were replaced with unified Soviet symbols. In recent decades, new forms of remembrance have also appeared, including the "Christ on Golgotha" monument and an ecumenical cross, emphasizing the supranational character of the place. The cemetery is maintained by the Municipal Management of Public Services, and local social groups regularly engage in its upkeep. Although acts of vandalism have occurred, the necropolis remains an important testament to the region's history - reminding us of the victims of World War II and the complicated fate of Silesia.
